#Faisal Raza Abidi resigns from Senate - chairman accepts resignation

ISLAMABAD – Senate Chairman Nayyer Hussain Bokhari on Thursday accepted resignation tendered by outspoken Pakistan People’s Party Senator Faisal Raza Abidi after almost five years.

Abidi, commenting on a point of order, said that the Senate had failed to provide justice regarding his case against Justice Ifitkhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the former chief justice of Pakistan. Top PPP leadership asked the outspoken senator to resign from his seat after he (Abidi) was found violating the party discipline particularly his demand to impose martial law in Pakistan.

“Chairman Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari accepted the resignation of Senator Faisal Raza Abidi,” an official statement said on Thursday. With the resignation of Senator Abidi, the PPP strength will be reduced to 38 from existing 39. However, PPP will regain the seat comfortably after the election in Sindh Assembly where the party has simple majority.

Abidi said he registered a case against the former chief justice under the constitution that he violated decisions of the judicial council, while the Senate chairman assured him that the investigation report will be tabled within three days in the upper house of the parliament regarding his case. “Can you inform me about the status of my case,” he questioned.

He also said that the parliament was the supreme organ of the state. Abidi told journalists outside the Parliament House that he would not join any political party in future. “I will run non-political ‘Voice of Pakistan Martyrs’ in future,” he said.
