UNITED NATIONS – According to the United Nations’ report 35% girls and women characters in Bollywood movies shown with nudity.
India is also among the countries where Gender Discrimination in the movies or highest.
First time in the history the UN has conducted the survey about female characters in internationally known movies.
Research conducted by the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, and commissioned by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, was released on Monday. Among the findings:
It focused on films from Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom.
The report which examined 120 films from 11 countries said that there is a significant lack of females in family-friendly films — and those who are in movies are often shown in sexual and non-professional roles.
A female’s function in a film is very often “to serve as eye candy or be the girlfriend of the person that’s having all the adventures,” said the actress, who founded the Gender in Media institute to research and help improve how women are portrayed in media.
Women wear more revealing clothing, are thinner, and are more likely to be partially or fully naked. Comments about characters’ appearance were five times as likely to be directed at female characters than at male characters.
Women-directed films had 6.8% more females on screen than male-directed films, while women-written films had 7.5% more female presence than male-written films.
