Rangers arrest 3 key accused in Tahir Plaza inferno case

KARACHI: The Rangers on Monday claimed to have arrested three key accused in Tahir Plaza inferno case, in which six people were burnt alive in April 2008.

According to Rangers spokesman, the arrested suspects are Muhammad Ali alias Darinda, Naeem and Shams.

The Tahir Plaza, which housed lawyers’ offices lies adjacent to city courts, was set on fire on April 9, 2008, killing at least six people including two lawyers and two women.

In another development, Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) former chairman Babar Chughtai was detained by law enforcement agencies on Monday.

According to sources, Chughtai is suspected of facilitating target killers and the land mafia operating in Karachi.

The MQM condemned the arrest and called it a flagrant act of vindictiveness.

Chughtai is a prominent businessman and has played an important role in development and progress of Karachi as chairman of ABAD, MQM said, and added that he was arrested on the flimsy grounds that he had given donation to the MQM.

Committee asked whether it was illegal for any businessman to give donation to any political or religious party.

Meanwhile, the family of an alleged prime suspect in murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s former leader Dr Imran Farooq approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) against his detention.

The petitioner, Ms Sadia Bano, the wife of Moazzam Ali Khan, filed a constitutional petition against detention of her spouse.

The petitioner submitted that the personnel of a paramilitary force raided her house located in Block-8 of Federal B Area, near Azizabad, on early hours of April 12 and took away her husband and his belongings, including a laptop.

She stated that the family members approached the Azizabad police station to seek information on the whereabouts of Khan, but the police officer refused to give any details. Later, they also approached the Rangers, who too did not give any information.

She argued that the detention of the petitioner’s husband and the law enforcers’ failure to divulge any information on his whereabouts is violation of the Article 18 of the constitution.

The petitioner pleaded to the court to issue directives to the Sindh home secretary, director-general of Sindh Rangers, IG Police, SHO Azizabad and other officials to produce the detainee in the court of law along with the details of the criminal case, if any made against him.  Daily Times
