RIYADH: Saudi families prefer not to hold weddings during Ramadan although prominent scholar Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz said in his fatwa that to marry in Ramadan is permissible as there is no evidence of any prevention of such act.
However, Nadia Ammarah, a preacher, said: “It is permissible but bears danger. During this month, the newlyweds find it difficult to follow the commands, prohibitions and legal provisions that apply during the fasting period.”
Wedding manager, Khaled Al-Sharhan, said the wedding market shrinks heavily in Ramadan because of local norms. He said some families do not mind organizing engagement rites in Ramadan with invitations limited to family circles, while the completion of the ceremony takes place later.
Saudi social conditions require a “quarterly” session under which the young wife undergoes counseling during the first week of her marriage to create a smooth psychological transition from her family's house to her husband's house. The session was introduced when the girls were married off at an early age. Arab News
