MANSEHRA: At least three women tourists were buried alive under a glacier while taking selfies near Naran, police said on Sunday.

“Some picnickers from Karachi were on visit to Naran when three women who were said to be close relatives opted to take selfies under a narrow place overlooking a huge glacier on Lake Saiful Malook Road at around 4pm,” sources quoted eyewitnesses as saying.

“They were taking selfies when the glacier collapsed, burying the women alive.” Their bodies were recovered after an hour’s effort, and shifted to a Naran hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Rozina Bibi, Irum Waqar and Nimra Sufiyan.

Police said the bodies of the victims were handed over to the relatives who were accompanying them during the visit. The incident is the latest in a string of “selfie deaths” with the rise of smart phones. Earlier this week, five people, including two women and a minor girl, lost their lives after falling in River Kunhar in Balakot Tehsil while taking selfies.

On July 5, Peruvian police recovered body of a South Korean tourist under a waterfall in the Amazon jungle, days after he fell in while taking a photo of himself.

A week earlier a 51-year-old German tourist plunged 200 metres (650 feet) to his death while posing for a photo on a mountainside at Peru’s top archaeological site, Machu Picchu.

MANSEHRA: At least three women tourists died after being trapped under avalanche near Saiful Muluk lake on Sunday.

According to reports the women were taking pictures near the popular lake when the avalanche fell on them. They died on the spot. Locals rushed to the spot and made attempts to rescue them but the women were already dead. The bodies were handed over to the heirs.

The victims family said they belonged to Karachi and had arrived at there on a tour. Tourists have often complained about the dangerous and rough road leading to famous Saiful Muluk lake in the scenic Kaghan valley.

Saiful Muluk lake which is situated at an elevation of 3.224 meters above the sea level is quite a popular spot for tourists but according to them 10km road to the lake (Naran Saiful Muluk road) is dangerous due to its decrepit condition.
