Karachi: Mortein has introduced ground breaking killer-boards to reduce the incidence of Dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases in Pakistan. The killer-boards are well capable of killing hundreds of Aedes mosquitoes every day. The initiative is in continuance of their ‘Dengue Se Paak Pakistan’ campaign aimed at reducing Dengue across Pakistan.
In the past 6 years, Pakistan has witnessed massive outbreaks of Dengue with over 65,000 cases reported nationwide. In 2016 alone, 3,000 cases were reported in Punjab while Sindh accounted for over 2,000 cases of dengue victims. Most of the cases originated from semi urban areas and major metropolitan cities while unplanned settlements and rural areas equally fell prey to the consequences of the disease.
Shahzeb Mahmood, CEO RB, makers of Mortein and Dettol in this regard said, “RB is actively pursuing solutions to improve the health and hygiene situation of the country. Killer-boards is a testament of our commitment to providing innovative solutions for reducing the incidence of dengue. This technology is being tested here and so far the results have been remarkable which has encouraged us to scale up the project.”
Nearing the mosquito breeding season, the aim of the killer-boards is to create mosquito free public places to prevent diseases while also educating the masses regarding disease prevention and proactive measures to be taken to undermine the onset of mosquito population.
The boards are currently positioned in 3 locations in Karachi and attract mosquitoes through its bright UV light, carbon dioxide emission around the board, lactic acid lining on the sides and floor of the board and captures them through exhaust fans leaving them to dehydrate until they suffocate to death.
