CHITRAL: Different organisations have intensified efforts to introduce eco-friendly and recyclable shopping bags in Chitral town to save environment.
The cluster of the village conservation committees of Chitral Gol National Park named as Chitral Gol Community Development Conservation Association (CGCDCA) has come out with the idea of providing jobs to women in their homes by involving them in the manufacturing of the shoppers.
In a function held here on Sunday, district nazim Maghfirat Shah inaugurated the marketing process of the recyclable shoppers produced by the women in the villages bordering the national park. The material of the shopping bags was provided to the women by the association.
The nazim handed over a packet of shoppers to the president of Tajjar Union Chitral, Shabbir Ahmed, while CGCDCA president Advocate Alamzeb distributed the samples among the participants of the function.
Speaking on the occasion, the district nazim said that the polythene bags posed threat to the environment in Chitral by forming major component of solid wastes produced in the town on daily basis.
He said that the tourism sector in Chitral was affected by the polluted environment and no effort for promotion of eco-tourism could succeed without cleansing the city of pollutants.
The nazim assured the CGCDCA of support by the district government to give prevalence to the use of biodegradable shoppers in Chitral town and then in the whole district in different phases.
Earlier, CGCDCA president Advocate Alamzeb and divisional forest officer Irshad Ahmed dilated upon the project of eco-friendly shoppers and said that it was a supplement to the efforts already launched by the district administration.
They said that the project was aimed at production of the bags in desired quantity and size while keeping their prices affordable at the same time.
