VEHARI: At least 60 girl students of the University of Education, Vehari campus, landed in hospital on Thursday after taking ‘unwholesome’ food at the hostel mess on Wednesday night.
A large number of girl students took roasted chicken at the hostel mess on Wednesday night. About 4am, around 60 girls complained of stomach pain and the hostel administration called Rescue 1122 who rushed them to emergency of the Vehari DHQ hospital.
Medical Superintendent Dr Fazal told Dawn that the girls suffered from food poisoning. He said a majority of the girls were discharged from the hospital after treatment. “Some of them are still under treatment.”
He said 54 students were admitted to the hospital early on Thursday morning.
University’s acting Principal Khalil Ahmed told this correspondent that some parents got their children admitted to private clinics and hospitals. “A total of 102 girl students of BS programmes reside in the hostel.”
He said contract of [food contractor] Naseer Ahmed was cancelled. He said the food authority had taken samples of the food and drinking water and sent the same to lab for examination.
He said the mess was sealed till the completion of the inquiry.
Danywal police SHO Nasir Tabassam said after lab report case would be registered under the Pure food Act.
