Coronavirus: 2400 Iranian died after consuming methanol following fake rumors across the country 32332 infected
Some hundreds of people from Iran have reportedly died and over a thousand people have fallen ill after consuming methanol following false rumors that it can help to cure the disease caused by the coronavirus.
Iran is having a hard time coping with the Covid-19 pandemic. Recent statistics have shown that the virus has killed almost 2,400 people across the country and around 32,332 people have been infected, causing a panic among the population.

Thus, in a desperate attempt to protect themselves against the disease, several people have relied on fake remedies that have spread across social media, including alcohol.
Local media of the country reported that almost 300 people have been killed by consuming methanol.
According to an Iranian doctor working for the health ministry expressed through the Associated Press that the degree of the problem was even more alarming. He also estimated that the number of deaths is up to 480, with 2,850 people ill.
“Other countries have only one problem, which is the new coronavirus pandemic. But we are fighting on two fronts here,” said Dr Hossein Hassanian, the health ministry adviser.
“We have to both cure the people with alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.”
In this wake, over the past two weeks, several individuals in the southwestern province Khuzestan have been arrested for selling methanol for this purpose.
In the southern city of Shiraz and in the cities of Karaj and Yazd, the authorities have also reported several cases of people ingesting methanol.
