Tik Tok donates £5m to a Royal Nursing Foundation to fight against coronavirus
Tik Tok is willing to donate £5m to a British nursing fund to help it tackle coronavirus pandemic.
International news stated that the donation will be utilized by the Royal Nursing Foundation to aid the frontline nurses suffering problems. This is said to the greatest fund a social media giant has donated for the cause.
This donation is part of a $325m (£257m) worldwide fund that has been set up for relief.
Sources said that the amount will be donated through cash. Tik Tok will offer a total of $125m in the form of ad credits. This amount will be divided up between small-to-medium-sized businesses, non-government organizations, local authorities as well as healthy bodies.
Note that Tik Tok and other social media applications are making efforts to handle the spread of misinformation regarding coronavirus on their platforms. Carl Miller, research director of the center for the analysis of social media (CASM) at the think tank Demos, said that this is “an extremely sensitive public policy moment for them all,”
“Platforms like Facebook and Twitter and TikTok have become our public space.
“They know they are on another frontline themselves [and] governments may well legally require the tech giants to deal with misinformation.”
Tik Tok wants to donate to pay homage to the nurses.
“Despite the huge challenges frontline healthcare workers face on a daily basis, I have been enormously heartened by what we are seeing on our platform,” said the tech firm’s UK general manager.
Health secretary Matt Hancock said: “I’m delighted that TikTok is supporting the RCN Foundation which brings so much support to so many.”
