NEW DELHI: Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s description of Osama Bin Laden as a martyr exposes his failure as leader of South Asia’s second biggest country and part of his attempt to portray himself as the leader of Ummah.

Khan faced a growing backlash after he said former Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had been "martyred".

The Pak PM made the comment in parliament as he was describing the history of Pakistan's troubled relations with the US since American special forces killed bin Laden in 2011 in the northern city of Abbottabad.

"The Americans came to Abbottabad and killed Osama bin Laden. Martyred him," Khan said.

"Of late Khan has become very religious under the influence of his third wife. While he has completely failed domestically, externally he is trying become leader of the Ummah. Among a section of the community Bin Laden is seen as martyred and the one who attacked the US. This explains as to why Khan consider him as a martyr,” a source told ET.
