Hadiqa Kiani and Maharang Baloch Represent Pakistan on BBC’s 100 Women for 2024 List

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) unveiled its prestigious '100 Women for 2024' list, celebrating the most inspiring and influential women worldwide. This year, the list features two remarkable women from Pakistan: celebrated singer-songwriter Hadiqa Kiani and activist-medical doctor Maharang Baloch, whose exceptional contributions have garnered global recognition.

Hadiqa Kiani, a South Asian pop icon since the 1990s, was honored not only for her musical achievements but also for her humanitarian efforts. As a United Nations Development Programme goodwill ambassador, Kiani led the Vaseela-e-Raah project following Pakistan's catastrophic 2022 floods, rebuilding homes and providing support to displaced families in Balochistan and South Punjab. Her dedication to aiding vulnerable communities has solidified her as a beacon of hope and resilience.

Maharang Baloch, a fierce advocate for human rights, made headlines in late 2023 by leading a 1,600km march to Islamabad to protest alleged enforced disappearances in Balochistan. Despite being arrested twice during the journey, her determination and leadership under the Baloch Yakjehti (Unity) Committee have highlighted the plight of countless families seeking justice. Her activism has also earned her recognition on the TIME100 Next 2024 list of emerging leaders.

Both women join an extraordinary lineup, including astronaut Sunita Williams and Nobel laureate Nadia Murad, underscoring their significant impact on their communities and beyond. Their inclusion is a testament to the resilience, courage, and transformative power of women in Pakistan.
