An ABVP worker burnt himself while trying to set an effigy of AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on fire during a protest in Kanpur today.
A worker of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) burnt himself while trying to set an effigy of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on fire during a protest in Kanpur today.
ABVP workers were protesting against Owaisi's remark that he will not chant Bharat Mata ki jai even if a knife is put to his throat.
Some members of the ABVP, a student organisation affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had gathered at a busy intersection in Kanpur to protest against Owaisi.
Amid chanting of Bharat Mata ki jai, one of the protesting men tried to set Owaisi's effigy on fire. While setting ablaze the effigy, his shirt also caught fire. The man struggled hard to take off his burning shirt and was finally rescued by other ABVP members.
The man, who is yet to be identified, suffered some injuries in the freak accident has been admitted to a local hospital.
"Nowhere in the Constitution it says that one should say: Bharat Mata ki Jai," Owaisi had said.
Owaisi's assertion came days after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said the new generation needed to be taught to chant slogans hailing mother India. Owaisi's remarks drew sharp criticism from the RSS, the BJP and Shiv Sena.
"I don't chant that slogan. What are you going to do, Bhagwat sahab," Owaisi had said at the rally in Udgir tehsil of Latur district in Maharashtra on Sunday.
"Will not chant Bharat Mata ki jai' even if a knife is put to my throat," he added.

نئی دہلی (اردو وائس پاکستان 17 مارچ 2016) بھارتی ریاست کانپور میں ایک احتجاج کے دوران اے بی وی پی کے ملازم نے خود کو آگ لگادی۔ تفصیلات کے مطابق اخیل بھارتیا ودیارتھی پریشاد (اے بی وی پی) کے ایک کارکن نےاس وقت خود کو آگ لگادی، جب وہ آل انڈیا مجلسِ اتحاد المسلمین (اے آئی ایم آئی ایم) کے صدر اسدالدین اویسی کے پتلے کو جلانے کی کوشش کررہا تھا۔
اے بی وی پی کے کارکنان اسدالدین اویسی کے اُس ریمارک کے خلاف احتجاج کررہے تھے جس میں انہوں نے کہا تھا کہ وہ ’بھارت ماتا کی جے ‘ کا نغرہ کبھی نہیں لگائیں گے اگرچہ اس کے گلے پر چھرا رکھ کر بھی بلاوالیا جائے۔ راشٹریا سوایامسیوک سنگھ (آر ایس ایس ) سے منسلک طلباء تنظیم اے بی وی پی کے کچھ کارکنان اویسی کے اس ریمارکس خلاف اختجاج کرنے کے لئے کانپور کے ایک مصروف چوراہے پر جمع ہوگئے تھے۔
بھارتی ماتا کی جے کا نغرے لگاتے ہوئے جب ایک کارکن نے اویسی کے پتلے کو آگ لگانے کی کوشش کی ، بجائے آگ پتلے کو لگنے کی اُس کارکن کو لگی ۔ اور دیکھتے دیکھتے اس کی پوری شرٹ آگ پکڑلی۔ بڑی کوشش کے باوجود بھی وہ شخص آگ بجھانے یا اپنی آگ لگی شرٹ کو اتار نہ سکا ، بلا آخر اے بی وی پی کے دیگر کارکنان نے آگ بجاکر کارکن کی جان بچائی۔ تاہم آگ لگنے والے مذکورہ شخص کے جسم پر کافی چوٹیں آئیں جسے بعد ازاں ہسپتال میں داخل کیا گیا۔
اویسی نے کہا تھا کہ ’’ کس بھارتی قانون میں لکھا ہے کہ ہر بھارتی کو ’بھارت ماتا کی جے ‘ کہنا ضروری ہے۔ میرے گلے پر چھرا رکھ کر بھی کہا جائے کہ میں یہ بولوں ، تو میں نہیں بولوں گا۔
