Super Highway Firing - 3 protesting drivers killed, 2 injured as FWO personnel open fire


KARACHI: Three heavy vehicle drivers identified as Mohammad Ayub, Niaz Ali and Rasool, lost their lives when Frontier Works Organisation personnel opened fire to disperse the protesters near the Kathore bridge here at the Super Highway today.

Though Deputy Inspector General claimed that the FWO personnel resorted to aerial firing to disperse drivers according to Dr Seemi Jamali in charge of Jinnah Hospital’s emergency ward drivers sustained bullet wounds on their back and chest. At least two other drivers, identified as Wali and Hameed Khan, got wounded due to FWO firing.

Police claimed that truck drivers resorted to protest and pelt stones when FWO personnel attempted to implement the Supreme Court orders according to which certain restrictions were imposed on heavy vehicles concerning carrying a certain amount of maximum load.

Sources informed that there was a disagreement over excel load between FWO personnel and the heavy vehicle drivers. DIG Amir Farooqi stated that FWO personnel were attempting to implement the SC verdict, when  the drivers of loaded vehicles commenced parking their trucks on the highway in protest against their endeavors. 

Following the firing incident milieu got tense and in order to contain any aggravation in situation additional contingents of police have been posted.  No arrest has so far been made.

Inspector General of Sindh Police Kaleem Imam, taking notice of the incident, ordered a report from Malir Senior Superintendent of Police Ali Raza.
