Nationalist politician Muhammad Khan Achakzai was today appointed Governor of Pakistan's troubled southwestern province of Balochistan.
"President Asif Ali Zardari today, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has appointed Muhammad Khan Achakzai as Governor, province of Balochistan," presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
Achakzai is the elder brother of Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who heads the nationalist Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party.
The younger Achakzai recently urged the PML-N government to take action against everyone who had supported former dictator Pervez Musharraf's regime.
The Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party draws support from Pashtuns living in the northern part of Balochistan.
It recently joined hands with the PML-N and the National Party to form a coalition government in Balochistan.
Though the PML-N is the largest party in the Balochistan Assembly, it agreed that the Chief Minister would be from the National Party and the Governor from the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party.
