ISLAMABAD – Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif told the parliament on Tuesday that a breach had been developed in Athara Hazari flood protective embankment as a measure to save Trimmu Headworks and the Jhang city from further destruction.
He said that with the cooperation of the provincial governments the damage caused by floods could be reduced. He informed that so far 328 people have been killed in floods and rain-related incidents. Briefing the joint sitting of the parliament about the flood situation, Khwaja Asif said that the Meteorological Office had predicted below-average monsoon rains in Pakistan.
Asif said that measures must be taken to improve their forecast. He said that the water level at Mangla had increased on September 5 threefold. The defence minister said despite limited resources, the government was making all out efforts for the relief and assistance of the people affected by rains and floods.
He said that all the flood related agencies were working beyond their capacity and resources to tackle the situation. He called upon all the political parties to respond to the current crisis without politicizing it. It was a national tragedy and leaders from all political shades must rise to the occasion and demonstrate unity for the assistance of the affectees.
Giving an overview of damages caused by flash floods, the defence minister said that 128 people have been killed most in rain related incidents in different cities. He said that the floods have partially damaged 1242 houses while completely sweeping away 191 houses. He added that 1053 villages had been affected by the rains and floods while standing crops on 325,000 had also been damaged.
He said that the floods had affected a population of about 436,000. Over 18200 people have been evacuated. 2000 people are living in relief camps. Over 450 health centers had been established for the flood affectees. He said the concerned agencies including NDMA, PDMA and district administrations were working tirelessly to cope with the flood situation.
He said that not only Pakistan but also India had been hit by massive floods as well. Gujranwala division was perhaps, the worst-affected area across Punjab, according to Khwaja Asif.
