More husbands committing suicides than wives
Married men in Hyderabad committing suicide are alarmingly high. The number of married men putting an end to their lives every month in the city attributable to various reasons is two times more than that of married women.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau and that of police records, every week five husbands commit suicide in Hyderabad. Financial problems and marital problems are the main reason behind these suicides.
According to Experts, the 'conventional gender role' of men makes them reluctant to seek help for suicidal feelings and depression, and therefore men are more prone to suicides.
As per NCRB data, 257 married men committed suicide in the city the previous year alone in Hyderabad, whereas only 130 married women ended their lives. The data also illustrated that men aged between 30 and 44 are more prone to suicides with 162 people belong to this age group ending their lives. The majority of these men also belong to the middle and upper middle class.
Whereas among unmarried men love failure, financial issues and career problems led to suicide, family problems were the main cause for the suicides of married men.
“Due to lack of physical as well as mental intimacy between married partners, men are stressed out. It happens due to increased work hours, and lack of proper communication. If both husband and wife work and if they have different shifts, they hardly have time to even meet each other,” said Purnima Nagaraja, a consultant psychiatrist of the Dhriti Centre for Psychological Wellness, adding that more than a few men had make contact with her organisation with these problems.
Most of their clients, according to Purnima were working in the IT sector and MNCs in the city. AS per Experts saying men aged among 27 to 45 are generally ambitious and want to make money, and when their dreams are not fulfilled they get down in the dumps.
The NCRB data showed that not even a single divorced man committed suicide in Hyderabad last year while three widowers over and done with their lives.
When the country as a whole is taken into consideration, the data showed that the suicide rate is higher among men than women.
