Researchers at Razi Institute for Serum and Vaccine in Shiraz in southern Iran have produced nutritious powder from egg waste, which can be used in producing animal feed.
Dr. Mohammad Javad Mehrabanpour, head of the institute, said the powder has high amounts of protein and calcium, Mehr News reported.
Chicken eggshells are made up of 95 percent calcium carbonate by weight and the rest is organic material.
A single eggshell weighing six grams yields around 2,200 mg of calcium.
The rich calcium carbonate shell has been used in calcium deficiency therapies in humans and animals.
Eggshell particles are used in toothpaste as an anti-tartar agent.
Powdered eggshells have been used for bone mineralization and growth. APP
