A Lady Tractor Driver In The Land Of Khaps!

Haryana is dubious for its skewed sex ratio but Suman Rani is penning a different story. Leaving household chores behind, she is all set to try her hand at mechanized farming and has applied for driving licence for a tractor.

The 27-year-old from Hisar is a graduate and is married to Anil Kumar who is a son of a small farmer from Hansi sub-division of Hisar district.

Rani said she applied for a driving licence to support her husband and in-laws in farming and related activities. She appeared before the Registering and Licencing authority (Hansi) for the driving test on March 27. Officials in transport department say she is one of the rare cases they have come across.

Once she gets the licence, Rani plans to drive the tractor to grain market and other places. "My husband has been very supportive and let me help him when I expressed the keenness to," she said when asked how her husband reacted to her decision. The mother of two kids says she intends to go to the fields after doing household chores.

"Once I get the licence, I shall be able to go to grain markets and can ferry other women of the village to temples or nearby villages as well," she said.

Her husband is as excited. "Once she begins supporting me, I can venture out and tap additional sources of income. Now I am confident that she can plough the field and do other works too," Kumar said and added, "Our family is very progressive. Even if they don't support us in anything, they never oppose us. This is what has happened in Suman's case as well."
