Utility Store Corporation to open 1000 new stores all over the country: say MD

ISLAMABAD: Managing Director, Utility Store Corporation (USC), Sultan Mehmood has said that 1000 new outlets would be opened all over the country to provide essential food commodities to the population on reduced prices.

At present, the USC is operating 34 percent in the urban areas and 66 percent in the rural areas.

While briefing members of Senate Committee on Industries and Production here, he said that sales at USC's outlets remained at Rs 25,000 during the first six month of financial year 2015-16.

He informed that the annual sale of the Corporation was recorded Rs 80 billion in 2013-14 and Rs 60 billion in 2014-15 respectively.

About reason of the decrease in sale during last two years, he said that the government withdrew subsidy on sugar in light of Cabinet decision in 2007-08.

He pointed out that most of the customers used to visit USC outlets to buy sugar on subsidized rates along with other commodities.

He, however, said that USC has ensured the quality of commodities in sales and purchase, adding, "We purchase commodities from credible national and multi-national companies."

Regarding appointments in the Corporation, he said that last time appointments were made in 2012 in PBS-16 after that no regular appointments were made in the corporation.

The Managing Director said that currently 3,412 daily wagers are working in USC, which is supporting staff in different areas of the country.

Sultan Mehmood said that the USC contributed Rs 35 billion in shape of taxes to the national exchequer in last seven years.

"We are not getting any fund from the government or from any other side and we manage the expenses including salaries and other expenditure for over 14,000 staff members from our own resources, "he added.

He said the USC is providing quality food commodities on 5% to 10% discount rates as compared to open market.

Now the corporation is passing under the process of modernization and the whole system would be computerized across the country.

"We need more support from the government to compete with competitive private sector and facilitate the common masses," he said. APP
