Judicial probe into girl student’s suicide sought

CHITRAL: Elders of the Harchin and Raman villages of Chitral on Thursday demanded judicial inquiry into the suicide by a schoolgirl after being sexually harassed.

Speaking at a press conference, Muhammad Qayyum Shah, Abdul Aziz, Sharifuddin and others said that Tahira Bibi, a student of the Mayon Public School, was sexually harassed in the school classroom.

The elders alleged that Deedar Ali, a sanitation worker at the Government High School in Rahchin, had harassed the student. They said a case was registered against the accused at the police checkpost, but the eyewitnesses refused to appear before the court.

The elders said the girl took the extreme step to end her life after failing to get justice. They claimed the girl consumed poison at 8am inside the school while the school administration closed the school at 11am and left her to die inside the building.
