Demand for more investment in education
05.07.2019 | An estimated 200 million children worldwide are currently unable to attend school. Particularly affected are girls in African countries, in Pakistan and in India. At the G7 summit in Paris, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and German Development Minister Gerd Müller called on states to make their right to school a priority for international politics. The same applies to enforcing the prohibition of child marriages. This can only succeed with an educational offensive in the poorest countries in the world.
At a joint meeting of G7 development and education ministers with ministers from Sahel states, they made it clear that not even every second child in their country learns to read and write. High birth rates led to a doubling of the population within 20 years.
"We now have to make education and training the focal point of our local cooperation within the G7 and EU states, and to double measures," Minister Müller said after the meeting. "It's hard to understand that development funding globally fell 2.7 percent to $ 165 billion, while spending on military has risen to $ 1,700 billion," the minister continued.
