Iranian-Made Medical Devices: A Growing Industry

Iran, a country with a rich history and a vibrant culture, is making significant strides in the field of medical device manufacturing. According to Ahmad Moslemi, an official quoted by IRNA, Iranian-made medical devices worth approximately $50 million are exported to 40 countries annually. Let’s delve into the details:

Manufacturing Boom

Over the past five years, the number of manufacturing companies in Iran has increased fivefold, with approximately 2,000 companies currently operating. These companies are involved in producing a wide range of medical equipment, including implants and advanced devices.

Local Production and Hospital Upgrades

Iran’s commitment to self-sufficiency is evident in its medical centers. 15,000 new hospital beds have been added, with 90 percent of the equipment produced locally. This investment aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure and improve patient care.

Iran Health Expo 2024

The 25th international exhibition of medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and laboratory equipment, known as Iran Health Expo, will take place from May 18-21 at the Tehran Permanent International Fairgrounds. The event brings together domestic and foreign companies, with 40 percent of attendees being manufacturers. Key goals include developing health technologies, attracting foreign investment, and showcasing Iran’s latest medical achievements.

Rise in Exports

Iran has witnessed a remarkable 300 percent growth in exports of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment during the first four months of the past Iranian calendar year. This surge highlights the country’s commitment to advancing its healthcare sector and contributing to global health.

Domestic Production and Imports

Over 70 percent of medical equipment and 100 percent of normal hospital beds are now domestically made. Specific ICU and CCU beds, along with operating room equipment, are manufactured using cutting-edge technology. However, Iran still imports about one billion dollars worth of medical equipment annually.

Knowledge-Based Firms

More than 227 knowledge-based firms play a crucial role in supplying medical equipment to health centers across Iran. Their innovative contributions drive progress in healthcare technology.

In summary, Iran’s medical device industry is on an upward trajectory, with a focus on local production, exports, and technological advancements. As the country continues to invest in healthcare infrastructure, it aims to improve patient outcomes and contribute to global health initiatives .
