At least 31 people have died, and over 60 are still receiving treatment after consuming tainted liquor in Tamil Nadu, India, as reported by a government spokesperson on Thursday. The victims, suffering from vomiting, stomach ache, and diarrhea, were admitted to hospitals in the Kallakurichi district, located 250 km from Chennai.
The state government has suspended at least 10 officials, including the district's collector and police chief, due to their failure to prevent the incident. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his shock and sadness over the news, stating that action has been taken against the responsible officials.
Govindaraj, 49, was arrested for selling the illicit liquor, and 200 liters of the methanol-mixed alcoholic drink were seized. This tragic incident follows a similar case last year in a nearby district where more than a dozen people died.
