A 30-year-old resident doctor at AIIMS allegedly killed herself by slitting her wrist at a hotel in central Delhi's Paharganj on Saturday, leaving behind a suicide note and a Facebook post that said her five-year-old marriage with another AIIMS doctor had not been consummated because her husband was gay.
The woman, Priya Vedi, a senior resident doctor in the anesthesia department, also alleged that she was being tortured for dowry. Her husband, Kamal Vedi, a senior resident doctor of dermatology and venerology, has been arrested and a dowry death case registered.
"In these five years I was just a wife tag for him," Priya wrote in a Facebook entry posted at 2.45pm on Saturday, in which she claimed her husband had relations with other men.
This is what she wrote in the post:
Priya had checked into the hotel at 12.30pm that day. Her body was discovered by the staff who entered the room around 8.30am on Sunday. "She was lying in a pool of blood with her wrist vein slashed. The drip attached to her wrist indicated she injected poison but only the postmortem report will confirm what the drip was about," said a senior police officer.
AIIMS DOC SUICIDE
According to the police, Priya had submitted her driving license as identity proof while checking into the hotel on Saturday afternoon. Police were informed about the alleged suicide by the hotel manager after she had not responded to calls from the room service. Priya had left her house in south Delhi on Saturday morning saying she had emergency duty at the hospital, police said. Before taking the extreme step, she wrote on her Facebook wall about her husband's alleged sexual orientation. Police said her suicide note was similar except for an added line on torture done by her husband and in-laws over dowry.
"I am married since five years with Dr Kamal Vedi. We don't have any physical relation till now... I found a fake Gmail account in his laptop through he was chatting with his gay friends and (watching) gay porn...connecting with gay communities," Priya wrote on Facebook. She also mentioned that the doctor had initially convinced her that the email account had been hacked. Then, she said, her husband started finding faults in her and her family. "They tortured me a lot mentally in these five years," the post said. for him,"
She added that her husband had admitted to being gay a month ago. Meanwhile, Priya's family members from Jaipur rushed to Delhi after they got a call from her in-laws. Said her elder brother, Vijay Verma, is also a doctor in Jodhpur, "The couple allegedly had a fight on Friday. We got a call from her in-laws asking us to come to Delhi. They didn't tell us the reason. On Saturday, Priya called each one of us between 12.30 and 1.30pm. She was crying and saying she was fed-up."
Priya's younger brother, Lokesh, who works in a bank, alleged that Priya's husband used to dominate her. "Priya kept quite about her husband because of social taboos but she was quite supportive. Her in-laws were torturing her to get a divorce but she wanted to accept him the way he was," Lokesh said. Her family members also alleged that she was given an overdose of sleeping pills by her husband.
Meanwhile, a magistrate enquiry has been initiated and Priya's parents have given their statement. Police have arrested Kamal under IPC sections 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 304 (B) (dowry death).
